This blog post was written by Nathaly Cepeda Espanol, a Yahel Social Change Fellow living and working in Kiryat Haim, Haifa.

As I embarked on this extraordinary adventure, I was met with a mix of curiosity and concern. "Aren't you afraid?" people would ask, questioning my decision to volunteer in uncertain times. But I've discovered that life in Israel pulsates with energy, reminding me that every moment is precious. I learned that חיים - Haim means "life" in Hebrew, and it's become one of my favorite words. When I found out that my neighborhood, Kiryat Haim, bore this name, I took it as a sign that a new chapter of life was unfolding before me – one that would be more spontaneous, refreshing, and full of wonder. Volunteering during this time has been a life-changing experience. I've been enrolled in various projects and locations, and learning from the people I've met along the way has been remarkable.
Empowering Young Minds: Teaching English at School:
The elementary school has been a joyful experience. I've had the privilege of teaching English to enthusiastic students. Watching them progress in their language skills has been a true delight. Despite the ongoing situation, the school has remained a beacon of normalcy, inspiring me with its resilience. Education is a powerful tool for empowerment, especially in times of conflict. By providing students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed, we can help them build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
Unlocking Potential: Teaching and learning at Educational Centers:
I also have the opportunity to work at educational centers for adults, where I teach Spanish and witness firsthand the excitement and enthusiasm of adults as they embark on the journey of learning a new language. Being part of their educational experience has been both fulfilling and eye-opening, as I see how eager they are to acquire new skills and broaden their horizons. It's incredibly rewarding to watch them grow in confidence, slowly gaining the ability to communicate in a language they may have never thought they'd master. As they progress, I can't help but be struck by their determination and resilience.
Despite the challenges they face, whether it's balancing work, family, or other commitments—they remain committed to their goals and keep pushing forward. Their dedication is truly inspiring, and their enthusiasm for learning serves as a reminder that it's never too late to take on something new and make meaningful changes in one's life. Their conversations, rich with unique perspectives and life experiences, have been a constant source of inspiration for me as well.
These interactions have deepened my appreciation for lifelong learning and the powerful impact education can have at any stage in life. Each day spent with my students not only enriches their lives but also reminds me of the transformative power of learning and the incredible strength of the human spirit.
Finding Solace in Nature: Tending to the Community Garden
Amidst the tension, the community garden has been an oasis of peace and tranquility. Nurturing the plants and watching them flourish was a powerful reminder that even in difficult times, beauty and life persist. Nature has a way of healing and comforting us. The simple act of planting a seed or tending to a flower can be a powerful reminder of the beauty and wonder of the world around us.
Supporting the Next Generation: Helping with the After-School Program
I have also had the opportunity to work with an after-school program, helping children with their homework and activities. Seeing them learn and grow was a true joy, and I am grateful to be part of their educational journey. As I worked with children, I am aware of the importance of supporting the next generation. By providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed, we can help them build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
Creating Connections: Working with Young Adults with Disabilities
Finally, I have the privilege of working with a program dedicated to helping young adults with disabilities develop the skills necessary to live independently. Watching them take on new challenges and gradually gain confidence in their abilities was an incredibly heartwarming experience, and I felt truly honored to be a part of their journeys. Over time, I witnessed these young adults grow in ways that were both inspiring and impactful. What stood out to me the most was their unwavering determination and resilience. Despite the various obstacles they encounter, they remain optimistic and enthusiastic, constantly striving to improve themselves and their circumstances.

Whether it has been learning how to manage everyday tasks, navigate social situations, or pursue their career goals, they have approached each new lesson with a sense of purpose and a desire to build a better life for themselves. Their perseverance is a reminder that, regardless of the challenges life throws our way, it’s the strength to keep moving forward that ultimately leads to growth and success. Each day spent with these remarkable individuals has deepened my appreciation for the importance of creating inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive.
This experience as a volunteer has been nothing short of transformation so far. I've witnessed the resilience and determination of this amazing country, and I've been inspired by their ability to maintain normalcy and improve their lives despite the challenges. As I journey through this unpredictable landscape, hope remains my constant companion. I've learned already, that even in the darkest of times, there is always a way forward, always a glimmer of hope. And I've discovered that by working together, we can build a brighter future for ourselves and for those around us. Sometimes, it’s not fear that holds us back, but a deep-seated longing to push forward, to explore, to experience.
This program has been a catalyst for growth. In the end, volunteering here has taught me the value of resilience, hope, and community. At some point, all we need is a sense of being part of a community, someone to share our thoughts with, and a reminder that life’s beauty lies in the eyes of those who are persistent, it’s in the gentle gazes that have weathered storms and found reasons to keep moving forward even in the changing and uncertain times.
